According to the UNHCR, there are currently 65.6 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, with 22.5 million of these being refugees. This is the story of one of these refugees who has had to leave their home due to the Yazidi Genocide in 2014.
Aziz Alias Mhe is a 23-year-old refugee who is currently living in Bersive 1 camp with his family and 4,000 other families who all practise Yezidism from the Sinjar district. There is ten of his family together in this camp, Aziz lives with his wife, child, father, mother and siblings.
Aziz is a budding journalist and talented photographer having successfully completed an undergraduate degree before the genocide. He, like many others in his position, rely on NGO’s for support and the Iraq government for supplies like food and water to survive. For the past 3 months, students have been in contact with Aziz in the hope to spread his story so that he and his family may have the opportunity to escape the camp and live in safety.
